Phillip Martin studied composition at the University of Michigan with Leslie Bassett and William Albright and at the University of Denver with Normand Lockwood. His chamber opera Tom Sawyer, based on Mark Twain's novel, was premiered by Hartford Opera Theater in 2010 at the Mark Twain House in Hartford, Connecticut as part of city's commemoration  of the centenary  of Twain's death. According to OperaPulse, the opera employs “elements of Baroque, Romantic, and minimalist music to build intense feelings and draw the listener into the drama of opera.” ("I think what the critic is trying to say," Phillip suggests, "is that I could never quite settle on a style.")

He has also written two short operas: Fall Back, a celebration of turning back the clocks at the end of Daylight Saving Time, and Family Plan, based on Jacques LaMarre's one-act comedyabout a young couple's struggles to come up with a seating plan for their wedding. In addition, Phillip has written a number of short  choral pieces, some chamber works--primarily for cello and piano, and a number of film scores, including the score for the holiday comedy Fairfield Follies.

Phillip currently lives in Scarsdale, New York. He is the Chief Technology Officer for Gargoyle Strategic Investments, a hedge fund based in Englewood, New Jersey.
